baby rats

Last night was a trial. I decided to sex all the baby rats, just to see what I had. I also decided I needed to take photos of everybody. Which was more trouble then what it was worth, the squirmy little buggers. Especially since my webcam is so assy, you can't really see any of the detail in their markings and colouration.

What we have are 12 boys and 12 girls, even. Weird, eh?

Out of Aleister's litter, there are four girls. All of them are pink eyed whites. She had ten total, so the six boys are a mixed bag of two dark coloured ones with white bellies, one dark and white hooded, and three pink eyed whites.

Speck's litter is bigger and a little more hard to describe. Many of them resemble their mother, but since I have no idea what she actually is, I'm not certain what to call the babies. But, it looks like there are four straight out hairless babies (since they have remained kind of pinkish coloured and have little bits of fuzz instead of a baby coat). Two boys and two girls. The rest of the litter looks like Speck, only with a little variation in coat colour. Some of them are greyer then others. One of them looks almost fawn coloured. And some of them are fairly dark. Four boys and six girls. The entire litter is so tiny compared to Aleister's, despite the fact that they are only three days apart. I would have thought they would be similar sizes, at the very least. But, Speck was fairly tiny when I got her and still is smaller then Aleister. So, I'm wondering if it's just because their mother is smaller, they will be smaller too.

Both litters are just as active, however. They're both stealing food from their mother's and hopping madly around the cage. It's just Aleister's group is taking up more room then Speck's, despite the four baby difference.

A sampling of photos from both

This is from Aleister's litter.

This litter is really hard to keep track of because they're all so identical. And that's why I only posted photos of three of them, otherwise it would be redundant. All three I've shown are boys. The only girls in this litter are pink eyed whites and at this point, all of the whites look the damn same. The two dark coloured ones look almost identical, also. And they're both boys. The only odd ball in the bunch if the hooded one. I can spot him in a crowd, at least.

This is some of Speck's litter.

Don't be fooled by the tiny eyes, they actually are fully open. I took photos of this litter after the first and learned that it was easier to get them when they'd first been woken up. However, this did garner me some baby nibbles on my fingers.

They're smashing! I'm pretty sure Joseph will want furred dark/mixed colours and have e-mailed him that you've posted pics. However, as it is some horrible time of day in NJ, and he's on a night shift I guess he'll be back to you this evening.

Back to the paintbrush - oh me aching back/shoulders/ arms/head!

If you're taking requests, I request a dark coloured male and the dark and white hooded (or one of the white ones even, as long as they look different from one another).

     The end,
The Joseph of which Sheila speaks.

Precisely how is it GOOD for you? Has it been approved by the Food and Drug Administration?

It's all natural, baby. It's a protein vitamin. And, when applied to the skin, results in a fresh complexion!

That sounds rather unhygenic.

Oooh, oooh

I love the sandy-coloured one being clutched in your hand at the bottom. I think he should be called Nigel. Then you can make plans for him.
