I have a friend in you, oh Mister Clarinet...

I'm so excited; it's not even funny. :D

pretty! i take it he eats well?
what kind of housing do you have set up for him, if you dont mind my asking...

[identity profile] meetzemonsta.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The breeder told me that he's eating very well (rat pups).

I'm going to be putting him in the set up I had for my ball python that died a couple of months ago. Acrylic tank, the size of which escapes me off the top of my head, but is a good big one, with a sliding mesh lid. Under tank heater on one side, with a thermostat control. Two hides (one on the warm side), lots of plants to sneak about in. Suitable size water dish. Temp and humidity gauges.

I'm going to be buying a lightbox set up, to have day and night cycles because I live on the ground floor and the natural lighting in my apartment is next to none. I'm also thinking of getting a mild heat light because my apartment is also a bit on the chilly side (this is in case the temps aren't quite to my liking with just the UTH).

Be sure that the hides are tight; as in, his sides should be touching the sides of the hides. They need that security, otherwise they get stressed and that can lead to not eating :-(

[identity profile] meetzemonsta.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, ma'am!

The one hide is kind of big, so I'll be replacing that one as soon as I can. The other hide, however, is a wee coconut shell. And will most likely be the perfect size for him. :D

probably not a big issue, but when i had a small snake and a large "hidey" i just put more bedding mounded up in it...
added insulation too...

[identity profile] fabricdragon.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
sounds sensible. i assume you detoxed and cleaned the habitat from your last snake?
(i had a mite problem one time because i didn't adequately clean the cage...)

i found that with heat lamps, if you have a mesh top, you need to consider what the mesh is made of.. a friend melted a plastic mesh top because it was right under his (non light) radiant heat lamp.
when i used my ceramic heat lamp i put it over the water bowl, as that helped to raise the humidity as well. we have a dry house in the winter....

good luck with him, and keep us posted. 'kay?

It is a snake.

[identity profile] meetzemonsta.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Your powers of perception are truly mind-boggling, my dear friend!

[identity profile] greyboy.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean to say it isn't a snake?

[identity profile] smokeandreason.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Finally, a ball python that looks the way it should.

I'd always encounter ones that were way, way too thin because their owners insisted upon feeding the animal pinkies and fuzzies when the snake is born able to eat an adult mouse. That *points up* is what that species is supposed to look like.

Congratulations on your purchase and soon-to-be-acquisition. It was a big step, and I'm proud of you (yes, yes I really am, I don't care if I'm pretty much a stranger, I'm just brimming over with niceness today).

[identity profile] meetzemonsta.livejournal.com 2007-12-28 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks so fat and sassy. It's awesome.

The breeder told me that he's eating rat pups, which I'm unsure of finding a good source for frozen. But, I have plenty of adult mice in my freezer. And if he insists on the rat pups for now, I'll go on a search for them.

My boyfriend's ball python is pushing three feet right now (I think) and he recently started her on rats. And it's astonishing the reaction in her! She absolutely loves them so much more than the mice she was getting before.

She has such a good weight to her, also. No emaciated snakes in that tank, no sir.

Once the boy arrives and settles in, you should come by for a visit. I'm not far from you at all! If'n you do, you can also see the hognose that S. got for me my boyfriend. :D

Most pet stores that sell frozen rodents have both rat and mouse pinkies.

At worst, you could order them from miceonice.com or rodentpro.com

Rat pups are faaaaaatty LOL - no surprises why he looks chubby :-) Any rodent supplier will have rat pups; the pet shop where I used to work used SOS Rodent Express (she's out in the Morgantown, PA area, or something out there), and I know she had 'em. You can always ask S. for reputable ones, too (I pre-kill, because I never have enough animals to warrant buying frozen in bulk).

Nope, you're not far from me at all (like it would matter if you were; how far do I drive on the weekends? LOL) - you're just a straight shot down I-95 :D I would so totally come to visit; hell, I'm sure S. would have no qualms about accompanying me (after all, he did go on and on about how awesome you and the Engineer are - yes, yes he did). I so totally love hoggies, too. Like hardcore love.

It's cute that you're calling him S. *grins* Just had to throw that in there for good measure.

[identity profile] aprilrobin.livejournal.com 2007-12-29 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What a fatass!

[identity profile] evilbalddago.livejournal.com 2007-12-30 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I am detecting some negativity. Fatasses are wonderful and they receive the best slaps.

[identity profile] aprilrobin.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, maybe I'm a litte bitter.
However, it may be a moot point. Much like laps, snakes don't have asses.

[identity profile] evilbalddago.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not asses like we humans, but they do have places from which they poop!
