I wound up buying a pair of low top, all black Converse All Stars. They were the least offensive to my sensibilities pair of sneakers in the entire store. I feel like a duck with them on my feet, however. A flat footed and lacking in height duck.

The first person amongst my camping companions to make a comment about the state of my footwear or my height is going to get the back of my hand across their smarmy, giggling face.
