One of the things that a lot of the fluffy bunny people don't seem to realise is that the "freaks" who worked in those sideshows were happy with what they did. They didn't really have any other avenues available to them and felt that they had every right to cash in on what they were born with.
It always made me a bit angry that a lot of the shows were closed down for "exploitative" reasons. And the people who worked at them basically had no where else to go after having their work taken away from them by well meaning people.
A peeve of mine, I apologise for the sudden rant. I've done quite a bit of research on the subject and will devour any piece of information I stumble across regarding it.
An ex roommate of mine also used to have trouble with brushing his teeth because of his gag reflex. You could walk past the bathroom when he was in there and hear the *hack!* and then him begin to swear, quietly so the rest of us wouldn't hear.
