There is something hardwired into my psyche that makes me revert into a four-year old girl whenever I see an animal.

For instance, this evening. The Engineer and I were on our way out of the nursing home. We were meandering down a corridor and had just turned the corner when I spotted a little pair of beady eyes peering in at us through a glass door. "Oooh!" I cried, and immediately took two steps towards the door. "Stop." The Engineer said and put his arm in front of me.

Outside, there stood a possum.

Nevermind the fact that there was a locked and alarmed door in my way. Nevermind the fact that this was a wild animal that would most likely bite through my face if I attempted to pick it up. Nevermind the fact that it would have hauled ass the second I went near it (or played possum, heh).

I saw it and the only words that went through my head were: MUST HOLD.

The entire drive was thusly spent with me chattering on about possums. With their little ratferret faces and their pink noses and their rodent tails and their pouches and their wee little hands and...ummm. *ahem*

Yeah.

I can share the feeling that possums should be squeezed. We still have pictures of a possum that used to hang out on the railing of our back porch. He was ever so cute. (This was when we were making a rather poor attempt at being hicks and living way up in the poconos. The hicks hated us, we were commies.)
