My World Lit professor can recite the entire prologue of the Canterbury Tales in Middle English. And did part of it for us tonight in class.
PWHOAR. UNF. AND ALL MANNER OF OTHER NOISES. BE STILL MY HEART, PROFESSOR.
Also, I ran at the mouth about the Wife of Bath and played star pupil for the evening. I love me some Chaucer (even though he is, as discussed with Miss J last night, a motherfucker who got told). I was heavily amused by all the students who thought they could get by in a discussion about Beowulf (which we watched last week and were supposed to also read) by talking about things from the film that were not actually in the story. Like how everyone bangs Grendel's mother. NOT IN THE STORY.

Date: 2008-04-04 12:27 pm (UTC)Well, to be fair to them, there was a lot of banging in the Beowulf fanfiction of the time. The fanfiction phenomenon has actually been traced to 1030, with the short poem "Beowulf Plays His Horn," which, arguably, introduced the idea of the "Mary Sue," with the character of Signy who shared a name with the author.

Date: 2008-04-04 02:12 pm (UTC)I haven't seen Beowulf. I had high hopes based on the screenwriters, but the descriptions I've seen...eep.
What translation are you reading?

Do did I. And I honestly didn't have that much of a problem with the movie. I mean, it could have been a hell of a lot worse and it is, after all, an animated movie. Pure entertainment. I would recommend still watching it and keeping in mind that's it not going to be OMG AWESOME.

I don't have the text book with me, but I'll check next time it's in my hand.
Oh wait, it's out in my car. Next time I go out for a smoke break, I'll look!

I have no clue, actually - 10 points maybe? But it is quite fun to be able to bust out with some middle English at parties.
I hope you are reading the Seamus Heaney. It is fabulous.

By the by, not that you're fixin' on going to Rutgers-Camden, but we've got a lady over here whose life is Middle English, Chaucer, and also horses. She's a trip. Had her for Medieval Lit. She made us basically learn the phonetic system of Middle English, and I did part of the Second Shepherd's play in it. Was fun, fun stuff.
By the way, maybe this should be best posted to the bpal forum, but I was wondering if I could call upon your extensive BPAL knowledge base for suggestions for a first purchase. There really is a specific scent I have in mind; it's the smell of a perfume oil I had years ago. I had 'incense' as a search term -- bad idea, really, as 133 hits came up. Wondering if you could possibly point me to a category, as there's a billion choices (lovely as they are).
thanks. sorry for the babble.

Rutger's is actually one of my choices for when I go on to my bachelor's degree. I hear they have a fantastic Human Services program over there and it's closer than Rowan (which is my other choice), so it wouldn't be all that unheard of!

There's a couple this could be. Incense and resin are my two favorite notes in perfume. Cathedral is my absolute favorite incensey-type of smell from BPAl; it smells of church incense and is just glorious. But, there are quite a few others that could potentially be it.
If you're free at some point soon, we should get together and I'll let you smell through my collection of bottles. :D

'That's it, I think.' (*falls over*)
haha. Sounds good, I'd like to get together, at some point, definitely. Between the papers I'm freaking-the-fuck out writing (as is per usual, ever since CCC), I'll squeeze in a few moments' respite.
(Say. I'm supposed to be working on a paper now. har har.)
I'm not on AIM often, but if you are, I'll add you, and we'll plan something thataway, yeah?
