(no subject)

Yesterday, at work, I found a tiny mushroom
growing in the grass underneath of a
picnic table.

All by itself, surrounded by green.

Stories from my childhood tell me that rings
of mushrooms were meant for faeries. That they
were sacred places.

What does a single mushroom mean?

That could be the key to the mystery of course.. the single mushroom is for the faerie dance tutor to sit on whilst students follow the little footsteps... I imagine if you look closely you will see little faerie footprint outlines drawn in eloborate patterns around it (or simpler patterns for the less advanced students)...

Surely your feet can't be that big... or do you mean merely in relation to the size of the rest of their bodies?

I'll have to check the mushroom when I go back
to the office on Monday. A sight for my coworkers
to see. Me, practically prostrate on the ground
with my face buried in the grass.

They've seen me do stranger, I would reckon.

As for my feet, they're not in proportion with
the rest of my body. I'm only 5'3 and I think my
feet should have gone to a taller girl. Perhaps
there was a mix-up at the hospital?

Maybe you are just taller in spirit and your feet are there to balance you for when you reach the heights of imagination?

My feet are, curiously, a foot long... no really, I mean in inches they are a foot long... that always struck me as wierd and I do think they are enormous... my boots look like frankenstein monster boots.

Small children and uncouth adults point and stare... it's been a humbling experience...

Have you ever heard the idea that your foot
is always the exact same length as your forearm?
It always kind of freaked me out, when I was
younger. Mine are, but I never tried to
see if anyone else's measured up.

Hmm... At a rough guesstimate I think that may be true in my case also.. I don't have a ruler handy so I can't confirm it for sure at the moment.

I'm not sure it can be true for everyone though... because there are tall people with small feet?

Maybe we're just freaks?

Cool... it always bothered me that there wasn't much of a midway, sideshow culture left these days compared to years ago... now everything seems to be in your face reality tv type stuff... no art or craft or exploration of the unusual.

Is swallowing swords as tough as it sounds?

It's very tough. You basically have
to lose your entire gag reflex. Which is very
difficult to get past.

I haven't gotten up to any kind of bladed
objects yet, perhaps in another couple of
years I'll be good enough for that.

There's a few sideshows left, in the States
at least. But, even some of them seem to have
gone the way of pure shock value, rather than
exploration of the unusual. It's been a downward
decline over the past twenty to thirty years.

Much sadness, indeed.

Indeed... one of the things that bothered me (apologies for the delayed response I was struggling to make another computer work) was that one of the reasons given for the decline of the midway was that it was exploitative of people with real serious medical conditions and or deformities... but I always figured the problem was they just had a tendency to go "you can't do that.. you're being exploited" whilst ignoring any positive aspects of the life that 'freaks'led and the social support network that would have developed within the sideshow community and also just used it as a way to further exclude and marginalise people ... ie.. 'They' took away a lifestyle and a livelihood but didn't replace it with any other kind of support.

On the subject of sword swallowing... I can't imagine supressing my gag reflex... I have enough trouble brushing my back teeth :-(

One of the things that a lot of the fluffy
bunny people don't seem to realise is that the
"freaks" who worked in those sideshows were
happy with what they did. They didn't really have
any other avenues available to them and felt that
they had every right to cash in on what they
were born with.

It always made me a bit angry that a lot of
the shows were closed down for "exploitative"
reasons. And the people who worked at them
basically had no where else to go after having
their work taken away from them by well meaning
people.

A peeve of mine, I apologise for the sudden
rant. I've done quite
a bit of research on the subject and will devour
any piece of information I stumble across
regarding it.

An ex roommate of mine also used to have
trouble with brushing his teeth because of
his gag reflex. You could walk past the bathroom
when he was in there and hear the *hack!*
and then him begin to swear, quietly so the
rest of us wouldn't hear.

It wasn't really a rant... well, I don't see it as a rant as it seemed to be what I always thought but phrased much more cogently and eloquently :-)

Ahh... so I am not the only tootbrush gagger... I feel so much better now..

I smile because it helps to keep the
ickiness away from me. Something that I've
been trying to learn for a long, long time.
Maybe not even something that I've fully
grasped yet.

The whole idea was that it would help me over a little case of writers block... but I still find myself staring at the empty space and wondering what to say...

I have long and detailed internal monologues but it doesn't seem right to pin them down in my journal...

Must try harder :)
