It's only eleven in the morning and I'm already hitting the diet Coke fountain sodas. This does not bode well for a bright day. I've also realized that I should bring in a coaster for my desk, because whenever I have a drink, it sweats all over my desk and that's just nasty.

I've also brought in some of my old cassette tapes, that had been buried in my father's basement. So many mixed tapes, never sent to whoever they were made for. Communication by mixed tape, I believe, is something largely confined to my generation and a little bit before. I would labor for hours over these things, carefully choosing every single track and their placement. This one I'm listening to right now was most likely made in 1997 or 1998, due to the some of the track selections (it's also amusing because it has "Break" by Charlotte's Funeral on it, hee).

For your laughing-at-Tara enjoyment, here's the track listing in its entirety:

Try a little tenderness- Otis Redding
Break- Charlotte's Funeral
Kiss Off- Violent Femmes
Failure- Swans
The Last- The Replacements
Somebody- Depeche Mode
Sour Times- Portishead
Glycerine- Bush (shut up!)
I Don't Wanna Grow Up- Tom Waits
Prison Sex- Tool
Voices Carry- Til Tuesday
World Leader Pretend- REM
All Wrong- Morphine
Hey- The Pixies
Go To Hell- KMFDM
9 Million Rainy Days- Jesus and Mary Chain
Isolation- Joy Division
Save Me- Jesus and Mary Chain
Would For You- Jane's Addiction
All By Myself- Babes in Toyland
Out- The Cure
Chesterfield King- Jawbreaker
Some Kind of Stranger- Sisters of Mercy
Long Way Down- Michael Penn
White Belly- Belly

heh, thanks!
I drug out a few more mixed tapes today, as well. They're making me very happy in an otherwise dreary day at work.

don't get me wrong, internet, but

Also, it bears note that that Til Tuesday song always reminds me of you and I don't know why. I mean, I know why, but I don't know how that song in particular got attatched to you in a lasting sense. Somehow Mr Barr is involved.

Modern generations do not know what they're missing. There just isn't the care and attention in making a CD or MP3 playlist.

I have a whole milk crate filled with unfinished mix tapes, mix tapes that never made it to the people they were made for, and mix tapes that didn't quite turn out right.

Mix tapes were one of the coolest things about growing up when we did, because they were a really unique method of communication (and, of course, courtship). One of the highest compliments you could pay a potential partner was to hand over a mix tape on your first "official" date -- and you knew you were in if you got one back the next time you were together.
