Jun. 25th, 2009 12:43 amBeth Ditto is one of the fiercest bitches to ever walk this planet.
Ever, I said.
I've only heard one other song of theirs, but this makes me want to go out and buy every single thing The Gossip has done.
Too bad I wouldn't be able to put it in my goddamn iTunes and put it on my goddamn iPod because my computer is still under my desk, shitting itself and drooling.
Soon.

Date: 2009-06-29 06:10 am (UTC)I have read a lot of Beth's interviews; I knew who she was long before I ever got up the motivation to ever listen to her music, purely by my participation in some LJ communities. And I don't have a problem with her personality or the majority of the things she says. Some of the statements she has made are fucking fantastic regarding the fashion industry and the media's perpetuation of emotionally and physically unhealthy "goals" for women to have for their bodies.
When one is media-approved thin and gets naked/near-naked on stage or on a magazine cover or in a film, it barely garners a blip on the radar. And what coverage does happen, doesn't usually consist of being called "disgusting", "vile", or "repulsive".
You can be damn sure I'd talk a massive world of shit too if I got called things like that every time I got on stage or had a cover shoot, regardless of my state of undress at the time.
Hell, women like Britney Spears (at the one performance she did in 2007 that got a LARD AND CLEAR headline on the fucking New York Post) and Amanda Palmer (she was deemed too fat for mainstream by her record company in her Leeds United music video) get called similar things. There's something seriously fucked up in a society when shit like that is going down.
Beth has a lot of great things to say about how women and girls shouldn't be ashamed of their bodies or full of self-loathing, regardless of how they look. I'm cool with that.
I'll take obnoxiously loud over silent compliance any day of the week. That's how changes get made.

But that's a personal quirk. She would look a bit nicer if she dressed at least somewhat appropriately for her body size -- but that goes for everyone. A really skinny girl in clothes too small looks just as bad as someone her size in clothes too small.
I just called up the Amanda Palmer video... fat? What? Really? She has a nice body, she's skinny. I remember the Britney Spears thing. She wasn't fat, she just wasn't in the shape people associate with her, and she shouldn't have been wearing what she was. Same with the whole Jessica Simpson = fat thing a bit ago. No, she had on horrific pants that removed any sense of a waist and made her look thick.
People forget that what a woman wears REALLY makes a difference, much more so than a man.
I think people should always strive to be happy with their bodies, and if they're not, they should make it so. If Beth Ditto is happy, good for her. But it's almost a bit of "protesting too much," because most people who are genuinely happy don't run around constantly telling people "look at my body! I am happy with my body!" It almost feels like she's trying to convince herself, as well as the world.
But who knows? I have my own body things, and I know you and I don't see eye to eye on a lot of that stuff....
